You should already know our country just adopted the concept of rounding the cent to the nearest dollar or 5 cents. I would say it’s a good idea since prices of goods had gone up and I think not many things come in cents anymore. And, the government is saving billions if they stop producing the 1 cent coints that cost more than 4 cents to produce. So we bid good bye to the almost worthless copper 1 cent coins that we carry burdensomely around in our bags/wallet.
I used to have tons of 1cent coin at home. Every time after grocery shopping, we return with plenty of spare change that we dump into a bowl. I’m telling you that we have a huge bowl of coins. I am very sure that that bowl can reach up to few hundred Ringgit. In that bowl, I think about 30% of it is 1 cent coins.
So what my brothers and I had a plan to get rid of the coins. We split the pile of 1 cent coins equally and we targeted to use them up in 1 week. That’s a whole lot of coins! What I did first was to grab 200 pieces of 1 cent coins, walk to the mart and bought myself a loaf of bread. HAHAHA. I stood at the counter for 10 minutes for the cashier to count. All she did was laughed. I did that a couple of times since she didn’t mind the 1 cent. It was probably entertainment to her.
My brother took the coins and paid for toll. He said it’s funny to see the look on the toll collectors’ face. What’s even more interesting is that he gets to laugh at so many different expressions when they get the coins since it’s a different toll collector each time. Of course he only used the 1 cent coins when there isn’t much queue at the toll booth. Else, he’ll be cursed like crazy.
My other went to MPH and bought stationeries. He redid the process a few times because the maximum amount for 1 cent tender is 200 pieces. Everyone stared at him when he paid piece by piece with 1 cents. He had a few cents left, so he walked to McDonalds and got him a sundae ice cream. HahaHA.
So that’s how we managed to get rid of all the available 1 cent coins at home except the last 2 pieces here. Maybe in millions years time, my great great great great great great grand children can sell it as an artifact and make gazillion Ringgit. I hope.

Today, we went out for dinner at Pizza Hut. You know how cashiers usually ask for small change if we have any when we are paying. I usually offer small change to all my payments. Be it 5 cents or 40 cents. Of course it depends on how convenient it is.
So the dinner came up to RM46.95. And the casher asked if I have 95 cents ?!?!?!?!
My brothers and I exchanged an O-M-G look. We could have saved our 95 pieces of 1 cent coins for cashiers like this. Wasted! (If only 1 cents were still legal). It was easier for her to return me 5 cents if I gave her RM47 than me digging out 95 cents. I just told her that I didn’t have any change to save her all the embarrassment in the world.
Maybe she didn’t have enough 5 cent coins. So when she opened her cash register, I took a peep. She had tons of coins. 5 cents. 10 cents. 20 cents. 50 cents. You name it, she has it. Maybe if she dug harder, she can find a Singapore coin in that pile.
If I wanted to be mean, I could have told her that I will run to my car and dig out some coins for her. O-M-G! I cannot believe how silly some people can be. The rounding system is apparently too complicated for our cashiers.
